Today I thought I might share with you my thoughts on the reasons why we love having our nails done. There is a history behind the nail painting…There are emotions attached to it…Does it really make us high-maintenance? Or does it simply mean we take pride in our appearance? (I definitely don’t want to imply though that a person who doesn’t want their nails done does not take pride in their appearance, just to make that clear)

Nails Throughout History

It is thought that painting nails actually dates back as far as 3200bc, where dark colours were applied by men before they embarked on their manly war duties. For this kohl was used, a black with a green shimmer!

The Chinese royals would use golden and silver rich tones mixed with beeswax, egg whites, gelatin, and vegetable dyes.

During the times of Egyptian dominance, henna was used to colour/stain the nails, often the colouring depicting the class of a person. The richer, redder tones being for the higher class, and the softer/paler tones for the lower class people. Only someone with extreme boldness would dare paint there nails above their social class!

Fast forward 3000yrs, and a lot of pigment later!!

With the introduction of car paint, women saw something amazing occur. A paint somewhat similiar, a little more refined than the car paint,to apply to their nails. First came clear varnish (1911), then came rosy pinks (Cutex), rusty reds (1930’s, Revlon), and deeper rich reds.

The history of fashion, french manicures, evolution of nail art I will talk about in another post. We ladies have come so far!

Fast forward to today, there is no colour combination, spectrum, or social class that is unachievable when it comes to painting your nails. The limits are simply put endless.

Going to a nail salon, or just caring and painting them at home makes us feels good, pretty and like a lady. I may be slightly prejudiced, but this is why I do it. I like my hair done, and I like my nails done. I’m happy to go with out makeup, but when my nails are done, I feel divine. This is a right we all have. Anything we can to to make us feel beautiful and better about ourselves is our own choice, and thank goodness these days we are not limited by our social class. I personally love red nail polish the best, I’m not royal or a leader of a generation, I’m just me! A lady who likes pretty fingers.
